Prof. Ravindra K. Ahuja (BT/MT/PhD/ME/IME/IME/77/79/82)

Prof. Ravindra K. Ahuja an academician turned entrepreneur. Currently, he is a Professor of Industrial and Systems Engineering at the University of Florida, Gainesville. He also serves as the President and CEO of Optym (earlier known as Innovative Scheduling).


Prof. Ahuja’s association with the Institute goes a long way back. It started in 1977 when he joined the Institute to pursue his bachelor’s degree and continued till 1982 by which he had completed his Masters and Ph.D. as well. Post his studies, he renewed his relationship with the Institute but in a new role. From August 1982 to May 1996, he worked as a Faculty in the Department of Industrial and Management Engineering at the Institute. From May 1986 to August 1998, he was a visiting professor at MIT Sloan School of Management and to School of Management, Rutgers University, from August 1996 to June 1997. Since 1998, he has been with the University of Florida.

Prof. Ahuja has made major contributions to the theory and applications of network optimization. His main area of interest is Operations Research. He is a co-author of more than 100 research papers and book chapters in the areas of Industrial Engineering, Operations Research and Computer Science. He is also a co-author of three textbooks and an Associate Editor of three journals: Operations Research, Transportation Science and Networks. In 2007, he was one of the finalists for the “Innovations in Curriculum Award” given by the Institute of Industrial Engineers for developing IT curriculum development and writing textbooks.

  • Honorable Mention for the Best Paper Competition organized by the Transportation and Logistics Society of INFORMS, 2010.

  • INFORMS Fellow award, 2008.

  • Koopman Prize (given by INFORMS) for the best contribution to Military Operations Research, 2007.

  • Daniel H. Wagner Award (given by INFORMS) for Excellence in Operations Research Practice, 2006.

  • Pierskalla Award (given by INFORMS) to the best paper of Operations Research in Health Applications, 2003.

  • Lanchester Prize (given by INFORMS) for the best publication of the year in Operations Research and Management Science in the English Language, 1993.
